With an acknowledgment, the notary confirms your identity and that you signed the document. With a jurat, you sign in front of the notary and swear or affirm that the contents are true. The document, or whoever prepared it, will tell you which one you need. A notary can’t choose for you.
California law requires the signer’s right thumbprint in the notary’s journal for deeds and other documents affecting real property, and for powers of attorney. It’s a standard safeguard against fraud.
No. A notary verifies your identity and witnesses your signature, but can’t give legal advice, explain what a document means, or prepare it for you. For questions about the document itself, contact the attorney, lender, or office that prepared it.
